FAQs

Which type of steel is used to make catering cutlery?
Most professional cutlery is made from 18/0 or 18/10 stainless steel. The numbers refer to the chromium and nickel content. 18/10 stainless steel is more resistant to rust and has a shinier finish, making it ideal for high-end restaurants and hotels.

What is 18/10 cutlery?
18/10 stainless steel is considered the highest quality grade for cutlery, known for its brilliant shine, exceptional durability, and strong resistance to rust and staining. With 10% nickel content, it offers a polished, elegant finish that makes it a popular choice in fine dining restaurants, luxury hotels, and other high-end hospitality settings. 18/10 stainless steel cutlery not only looks sophisticated on the table but also stands up to the demands of frequent commercial use, making it a top choice for premium food service environments.

Can you put stainless steel cutlery in the dishwasher?
Yes, stainless steel cutlery is generally dishwasher safe. However, it’s best to remove it after the cycle finishes and dry it by hand to prevent water spots or corrosion, especially in busy commercial kitchens or hospitality settings.

How should cutlery be set on a table in a restaurant?
In a standard table setting, place the fork on the left, the knife on the right with the blade facing inwards, and the spoon (if needed) to the right of the knife. For fine dining, dessert spoons or forks can be placed above the plate. Align all items evenly for a clean and professional look.

Where can I buy cutlery sets from?
You can buy professional cutlery sets online at Heaton Catering Equipment. We offer a wide selection of durable, stainless steel cutlery suitable for restaurants, hotels, cafes, and events, with fast UK delivery and competitive prices.

How to polish cutlery in a restaurant?
To keep cutlery looking its best in a restaurant, start by rinsing it after use, then soak and wash it in hot, soapy water using a soft cloth, never anything abrasive. Dry each piece thoroughly with a lint-free or microfiber cloth to avoid water spots. Once dry, polish one item at a time using a polishing cloth and gentle pressure; a bit of stainless steel cleaner can help restore shine. Always polish in the same direction to prevent scratches. Store clean cutlery in a dry, organised space, away from food prep areas. Regular polishing not only keeps cutlery hygienic but also enhances the overall dining presentation for your guests.
