FAQs

What is the difference between toughened and untoughened glassware?
Toughened glassware is heat-treated to increase strength and durability. It lasts significantly longer than untoughened glass, making it ideal for high-traffic hospitality venues such as bars, pubs, and restaurants. When broken, toughened glass shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, reducing the risk of injury, making it a safer option for both staff and customers.

Untoughened glassware, while still suitable for commercial use, is more vulnerable to breakage and tends to shatter into sharp fragments. It's often used in low-risk environments or for aesthetic presentation.

Why do some venues require toughened glassware?
Local councils and licensing authorities often require toughened glassware in venues with outdoor drinking areas or where public safety is a concern. This requirement is typically part of an alcohol license agreement. Toughened pint glasses, wine glasses, and tumblers are especially common in outdoor beer gardens, nightclubs, and sports bars, where the risk of accidental breakage is higher.

What are lined glasses, and why are they used in hospitality settings?
Lined glasses include a visible line that indicates a specific volume, such as a half pint or full pint. These glasses are used to ensure accurate serving sizes in compliance with UK Weights and Measures legislation, which mandates precise quantities for alcoholic beverages. Lined glasses allow bar staff to pour drinks quickly and legally without needing a separate measure.

What is the difference between lined and unlined glassware?
Lined glassware features a stamped line that guarantees the drink volume meets legal standards, while unlined glassware does not have this marking. Unlined glasses are often used where drinks are measured using jiggers or optics, or where precise volume isn’t legally required (such as non-alcoholic beverages or mixed cocktails). However, for beer, cider, and wine served by the glass, lined options are often essential for compliance.

Is toughened glassware required by law in the UK?
While toughened glass is not mandated across all venues, it is commonly required by local authorities as part of licensing conditions, especially in areas where safety is a key concern, such as outdoor venues, late-night bars, or high-capacity events. Choosing toughened glassware not only promotes safety but also extends the lifespan of drinkware in demanding commercial environments.

How do I know if my glassware is compliant with UK Weights and Measures regulations?
To comply with UK legislation, glassware must be marked with the CE or UKCA stamp and a volume line (e.g., 125ml, 175ml, 250ml for wine; 1/2 pint or full pint for beer). These markings should be clear and visible. Glasses that lack these indicators may not be legally used for serving certain alcoholic beverages. Always check supplier specifications to ensure commercial glassware meets regulatory standards.

What types of commercial glassware are most popular for pubs and restaurants?
Pubs and restaurants typically use a range of glassware, including toughened pint glasses, wine glasses with lined volume markings, cocktail glasses, highball tumblers, and dessert glasses. The choice depends on the type of drinks served and the style of service. Toughened and lined glasses are often the preferred options for high-volume venues seeking both safety and compliance.

Can toughened glassware go in commercial dishwashers?
Yes, most toughened commercial glassware is dishwasher-safe, however, it is important to follow manufacturer guidelines to ensure longevity and maintain safety standards.

Are lined glasses required for every alcoholic drink in the UK?
Not all alcoholic drinks require lined glasses. Drinks served in pre-measured portions, such as spirits dispensed using thimble measures or optics, are exempt. However, beer, cider, and wine served by the glass must be sold in prescribed quantities and usually require lined and CE/UKCA-stamped glassware to remain compliant with UK Weights and Measures regulations.
